The opportunities for outdoor sports and recreation in Las Cruces and the surrounding areas of Southern New Mexico are as varied as the state's terrain. Few areas can boast six of the Earth's seven climatic zones, nor are they blessed with the towering mountains that rise above our high desert plains.
The clear, blue skies invite balloonists and glider pilots to soar on the wind. The nearby Rocky Mountain skiing is unmatched, with its soft powder and variety of terrain. The National Monuments and Parks, National Forests, and State Parks, all located in Las Cruces, and in the surrounding areas, offer outdoor adventures for everybody from weekend sightseers to avid back country explorers. Numerous lakes and rivers offer some of the best fishing and rafting in the country. Hunters, bird watchers and photographers alike rejoice in the area's abundant wildlife.
The area boasts 13 tournament-caliber golf courses, and although many people think of Southern New Mexico only as a desert, there are opportunites for boating, wind surfing and even scuba diving in the area.
